‘new to you’ needs you! Selling reclaimed items collected from your local waste and recycling centre, it can be a special treasure trove of just about everything! Because of all this it is a pretty amazing place to spend a Saturday morning volunteering. The retail warehouse, based at Cabot Lane Depot, is home to a group of dedicated volunteers as well as every item you can possibly think of! So if you think this could be the place for you to volunteer, keep on reading and become ever more excited for this opportunity.
Time Commitment: Weekly Saturday shifts are available across three different times:
8:45 am – 11 am, 11 am – 1:15 pm, 8:45 am – 1:15 pm
‘new to you’ is a council-led initiative that sells affordable reclaimed items, including furniture, crockery, ornaments, toys, sporting equipment, and bric-a-brac. All of the items we sell were originally brought to either the Nuffield Household Waste Recycling Centre or Milhams Community Recycling Centre. We are a self-funded scheme to support local people and community groups, and aim to help disadvantaged local households who are in need of essential items required to set up a home for day-to-day living.
Joining our award-winning volunteer team is a great way to gain new skills and experience, meet new people, and contribute to a project that changes lives within your own local community. Saturday is a great day to volunteer as it is the only day the ‘new to you’ is open, and there is always an amazing buzz as people dig for treasures in the warehouse. On a Saturday there are opportunities to work on the till, training for which will be provided.
We can offer you:
- Practical experience of working in a retail environment, and the opportunity to develop merchandising and customer service skills, alongside waste management knowledge
- A reference if seeking other employment
- Support from a supervisor and other experienced volunteers
We are looking for people who are:
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Available to work in the shop on Saturdays
We welcome all volunteers, from young people just starting out in the world of work to those with a lifetime’s wisdom to share, here are why some of our volunteers give their time:
“To socialise and to help the community”
“I have a passion for recycling”
“I love the physical side of the role, it keeps me healthy!”
