POOLE PROJECTS - ARCHIVED SITE

Coy Pond Gardens, Branksome

Updated 5th July 2016

As an English Heritage Grade II Registered Park and Garden, Coy Pond Gardens is one of Poole’s most treasured open spaces. Loved for its pond, with its very own island and thriving duck population, its mixture of native and exotic trees, rockery and weeping willows lining the stream banks, there is something for everyone.

At the request of the local community, local Ward members and park users we have been working on a range of improvements that will preserve this special and historic site, benefit wildlife and add to people’s enjoyment of the area.

The Project

Thank you to everyone who contributed their thoughts and wishes for Coy Pond Gardens; the areas we worked on include:

  1. Safeguarding the island in Coy Pond

Specialist contractors Cain Bio-Engineering have installed a continuous ‘Coirnet’ revetment to safeguard the island from further erosion. The edges have been planted with a selection of native marginal plants to give the banks extra strength.

  1. Improving access

In order to improve access and enhance usability of the site we have undertaken work to widen and resurface many of the footpaths throughout the site.

  1. Vegetation clearance & planting

We have undertaken some clearance work in places along the stream edges and introduced planting at the northern end of Coy Pond to enhance use of the open space by visitors and also to improve the site for wildlife

  1. Partnership with the Friends of Coy Pond

We are very lucky to have a passionate and hard working group of residents who volunteer time and energy to enhance and protect this special place. As part of the project we are building relationships to create a new partnership working arrangement.

Project complete

Thank you to everyone who came along to the celebration event at Coy Pond Gardens on Saturday 2nd July 2016.

Local residents were joined by the Mayor to commemorate the recent project which has been undertaken at this special open space and to give thanks to the Friends of Coy Pond who have provided great insight into the area and supported throughout.

A Foxglove Tree (Paulownia) was planted by the Mayor to symbolise this milestone and residents took the opportunity to make their mark by helping with some planting of the rockery, this is one of the many areas of work which the friends group continue to work on. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Friends of Coy Pond, new members are always welcomed so please visit thefriendsofcoypond.co.uk for details.

We hope you have and will continue to enjoy the improvements which have been made.
